Preface
This Training Manual is developed to help you with your flight training to become a
private pilot. All the required training exercises are included and clearly explained in a
colorful, highly visual, concisely written format. We also highly recommend this manual for licensed pilots to refresh and maintain their pilot skills, for currency training, checkout and proficiency checks.
You will learn to fly in a Cessna 172 (ICAO code C172) which is configured with 4 seats and 1 or 2 bagage areas. We have 3 Cessna 172s in our fleet, PH-CBN, PH-VHY and PH-WMA. All our Cessnas are approved for VFR day and night time operations. The
PH-VHY is also IFR equipped.
The aircraft category of the Cessna 172 is Single Engine Piston SEP (land). This is also the name of the class rating which can be found on your license after you have passed your Skill-test. PH-WMA is also equipped with a photowindow for our Specialized
Operations (SPO) activities.
The aircraft is fitted with a Lycoming engine rated at 160 Horse Power at 2700 RPM. The four cylinder engine is normally aspirated, direct drive, air-cooled, horizontally opposed, carburator equipped. The aircraft features a fixed pitch propeller with 2 blades.
Fuel tank configurations vary between aircrafts and can be found in each Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) and Supplement.
Total fuel capacity

(189 liter usable)
PH-VHY
163 liter
(152 liter usable)
PH-WMA

The Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) is 1089 kg. The total weight includes the pilot, pas-senger(s), fuel, bagage and the aircraft itself. You must never exceed this weight during flight.
Other characteristics are:
High wing
Cruise speed 100 KIAS
Fuel consumption approx. 9 USG/hr (36 lt/hr)
Intentional spins are approved by the manufacturer but are forbidden by
Vliegschool Hilversum (VSH). Banking is allowed up to 60º maximum.
Steep slips (sideslips during landing) should be avoided with flap settings greater than 20° due to a slight tendency for the elevator to oscillate under certain
combinations of airspeed, sideslip angle, and center of gravity loadings.
In all circumstances, the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) and Checklist as found in the flight bag are leading.
Because only the PH-VHY is equipped with all the necessary Radio Navigation equipment (like ADF, DME and GNSS), it is strongly recommended that all RNAV exercises are flown on the PH-VHY.
You should use this Training Manual together with the practical module of our Learning Management System (LMS) “All you need to fly”. In this online
environment you will find the necessary in-depth information and details of flight preparation and execution, such as spreadsheets, calculations, quizes, useful tips and references to various sites. Together with this Training Manual, Checklist, Flight Manual and Supplements (EPUB), this forms a very important knowledge base for your training as a student pilot and as a licensed pilot.
